Titans Receiver: Would Quit Over Anthem Rule, Deletes Tweet

An NFL player tweeted he would quit playing football if the NFL passes a new rule requiring players to stand during the national anthem. The tweet in question has since been deleted.

"Worried about how fans will react, and how that will impact ticket sales, the league is reportedly looking at the possibility of a new rule requiring players to appear and stand for the anthem". Owners are expected to discuss the issue next week.

Trump has repeatedly criticized players and teams who kneel during the anthem to protest, saying that any players who refused to stand should be fired.

According to ESPN, Matthews responded to fan's question on Twitter by stating that he would "be done playing football" if the NFL were to put in place a rule that would require all players to stand. Should be really interesting to if he ends up following through on his threat or not.

Last month, Matthews pledged to donate $75,000 to organizations that support oppressed communities. The receiver explained he didn't want his protest seen as a "publicity stunt". "I don't want to take away from what the whole protest is about, which is oppression, police brutality and inequality in this country".

Matthews, who turned 28 on Thursday, is in the second year of a three-year, $15 million contract signed in the 2016 offseason. They tried to have a silent protest, and look what happened. Why is it anti-American to exercise the right of free speech, while many drape themselves in the flag hypocritically while trying to deny others the freedom to exercise that right?
