Trump Nominates Kirstjen Nielsen To Head Homeland Security

President Trump is expected to nominate Kirstjen Nielsen, an aide to White House chief of staff John F. Kelly, to lead the Department of Homeland Security, a White House official said Wednesday. When Kelly served as Homeland Security secretary until recently, Nielsen was his top aide.

Mr. Kelly and Ms. Nielsen arrived at the White House after a tumultuous period that led to the departure of Reince Priebus, Mr. Trump's first chief of staff, and Sean Spicer, his original press secretary. Earlier in her career, she worked as a special assistant to former President George W. Bush. Before she worked in the Trump administration, Nielsen founded a risk and security management consulting firm. "She will be ready on day one", Trump said during a formal ceremony in the White House's East Room.

The Senate will need to confirm Nielsen's nomination. She is the first nominee for the homeland security post who had served in the department, according to the statement.

"I think her credentials are being a little bit inflated", said the former official, who requested anonymity to speak candidly.

The soaring value of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies comes despite growing warnings over a price bubble. And last month, JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon called the currency a "fraud" that will "blow up".

One former Bush administration official expressed concern over her selection, describing Nielsen as less qualified than Elaine Duke, who is now leading the department in an acting capacity.

Though the White House confirmed her nomination, the president gave an on-camera announcement Thursday afternoon.

The White House says President Donald Trump will nominate Kirstjen Nielsen to serve as his next secretary of Homeland Security.

Duke received praise for her handling of hurricanes that hit Texas and Florida, but has come under fire over the devastation in Puerto Rico.
