UNC receives report from NCAA on academic scandal

A few hours earlier, UNC scored a major and unexpected victory when the NCAA ended its seven-year investigation into the university's African and Afro-American Studies program without issuing any sanctions.

More than years later, the NCAA determined that its investigation into academics at the University of North Carolina was much ado about nothing.

North Carolina will be raising its latest basketball championship banner to the rafters of the Smith Center tonight at its annual Late Night With Roy event. Still, Syracuse and head coach Jim Boeheim were punished significantly, at least by NCAA standards, while North Carolina got off free on a jurisdictional argument. "Since 2014, the NCAA membership has acknowledged the question whether academic fraud occurred is one appropriately answered by institutions based on their own academic policies". They've been covering Carolina athletics for two decades and will have all of the fallout, including recruiting impact and what's coming next.

The NCAA said in a release Friday the committee on infractions panel found two violations in this case - the former department chair and a former curriculum secretary failed to cooperate during the investigation. "In fact, they recalled that a number of their non-athlete fraternity members took so many AFAM classes that they inadvertently ended up with AFAM minors by the time they graduated".

Weinstein stands accused of rape by multiple women, according to an explosive new story by The New Yorker magazine. In all, Boies has given $55,000 to Vance's campaigns since he first began running for office in 2008.

Despite the appearance that the NCAA wanted to dodge the issues, the continued reporting of Raleigh News & Observer newspaper reporter Dan Kane seemed as if it would force the NCAA to do something as his reporting showed how UNC athletic department personnel knowingly took advantage of the sub-standard classes.

The NCAA was unable to determine whether or not academic fraud occurred at North Carolina due to an NCAA principle that states that individual member schools are responsible for policing themselves. In many cases, athletes were steered to the classes by athletics academic advisers. He counted athletes who were no longer team members. None of that, was judged by the NCAA as an impermissible benefit.

"The panel can not conclude that extra benefit violations occurred surrounding the offering or managing of the courses as alleged".
