Violence erupts in Kenya over new election law

The Parliament in Kenya on Wednesday 11th, October 2017 passed an amendment to the country's election laws allowing one of the contenders in a repeat of a presidential election to be declared a victor in case the other candidate withdrew from the rerun.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on Wednesday said that Raila had not officially pulled out of the race as he was yet to sign Form 24A as required in the electoral regulations.

Kenya's opposition chief Raila Odinga dramatic move to pull out of the October 26 presidential repeat polls, grabbed the attention of major dailies on Wednesday."What it means", screamed the headline of the Daily Nation which reported that the dramatic withdrawal of National Super Alliance (Nasa) presidential candidate Raila Odinga from the fresh election slated for October 26 has triggered confusion and sent jitters across the country and beyond.

Odinga said the vote can't be free and fair because of the country's current circumstances.

The decision came after High Court Justice Mativo delivered a verdict that all candidates who participated in the General Election held on the August 8, 2017 were entitled to participate as candidates in the fresh presidential election.

Considering that the stock daily volume of 16.41 million shares, this represents a pretty noteworthy trading in volume size. If we take a long term observation, shares have been trading at a distance of -4.28% from the 200-day moving average.

In Nairobi police briefly used tear gas to disperse protesters who threw stones at passing cars.

Even so, it remained unclear whether, once Odinga's withdrawal from the race is finalised, that would force the October 26 re-run to be scrapped or whether it would simply go ahead without him.

Kenya's Supreme Court last month annulled the August election citing widespread irregularities in the counting process and mismanagement by election officials, and called for a rerun within 60 days. However, the process quickly turned sour, with attacks by Kenyatta on the judiciary.

President Kenyatta had insisted that re-run would take place as he questioned his rival's motive of withdrawing from an election after causing Kenyans to spend 12 billion Kenya Shillings for the rerun.

Tension between Kenyatta's ruling Jubilee Party and Odinga's opposition party have risen since the initial August election.
