Woman wins paid sick leave to look after dog

Italy has further cemented its reputation as a pet-loving country after a woman was given paid sick leave to look after her unwell dog.

With help from an animal rights group, Italian Anti-Vivisection League, she won the case for the days off to be treated as sick days.

They cited an allowance for absences that can be categorized as "serious or family personal reasons", The Guardian writes.

"It is another important step forward to acknowledge that animals. are part of the family in every respect", said LAV President Gianluca Felicetti.

The woman asked the University about the two-day paid leave, however, she was asked to motivate your request because the earlier leave was not granted due to care for the animals.

The librarian, who doesn't want to be identified, is single and says she considers the dog, who she rescued from a park, to be her family.

The lawyers used Italy's laws to support their case citing that anyone who abandons an animal to "grave suffering" be sentenced to jail for a year and fined up to 10,000 Euros or almost $12,000, The Guardian reported.

She said she had no family who could have looked after Cucciola on her behalf.

Cucciola is said to be recovering well with her owner by her side.
