Australia to deliver new cable to PNG

Australia to deliver new cable to PNG

Ms Adern on the weekend blasted Australia's handling of the issue as unacceptable as she continues to to push New Zealand's offer to accept 150 refugees and asylum seekers from Australia's offshore detention centres. "No matter what label you put on it there is absolute need and there is harm being done", Ardern said.

"If these people are taken in by New Zealand it will effectively be a back door into Australia", he said in a reference to the 1000 asylum seekers who died while travelling by boat to Australia between 2007 and 2013.

Now there are more than 400 refugees who have barricaded themselves in the mothballed Manus Island detention centre fearing they'll be attacked by locals if they're moved by Papua New Guinean authorities to alternative accommodation.

Manus Island refugees said they were advised on Saturday by officials their eviction deadline would be extended another 24-hours, by which point they would be forcibly removed from the processing camp which had been without food, water or medical supplies for almost two weeks.

"That's their issue, the point I'm simply making is the New Zeland Prime Minister knows they won't take up the offer, no Australain politician would take it up".

Mr Turnbull had a meeting with US President Donald Trump on Monday morning in Manila and the pair will share dinner together where the US offer to accept 1250 refugees - agreed by former president Barack Obama - is likely to come up.

"I see the human face of this and I see the need and the role New Zealand needs to play".

"I think it's clear that we don't think what's happening there is acceptable, that's why the offer is there."

Under the US deal, up to 1,250 asylum seekers detained by Australia in Papua New Guinea and Nauru in the South Pacific could be resettled in the United States in return for Australia accepting refugees from Central America.

About 20 asylum seekers on Friday left an Australian-run detention center due to close down in Papua New Guinea, but hundreds of holdouts faced forcible eviction amid an immigration standoff that has blighted Australia for years.

Acting Prime Minister Julie Bishop said there was no reason for the remaining men to choose to stay, rejecting accusations that conditions and facilities at the new camp were inadequate.

"Whether it be with local people or police ... there are concerns there's a high risk of miscommunication."
