Kashmir: Two militants killed in encounter

Two militants were killed, while a policeman was injured on Monday evening in a shootout in Handwara area in north Kashmir's Kupwara district.

The identity and group affiliation of the slain militants is being ascertained, the official said. A police spokesman confirmed the death of two militants and added that the operation was still under way.

The gun battle ensued after the terrorists opened fire on a joint team of police, Army and the Central Reserve Police Force at Galganzer village, prompting the forces to retaliate. After no contact was established with the militants, the search operations at both the places were called off.

The ultras shot at special police officer Ranbir Singh, who was posted on duty near deputy commissioner's office, a police office official said.

Additional security forces were rushed to cordon the area to foil any attempt by militants to escape. In a separate case in south Kashmir's Shopian district, militants assaulted a Congress worker.
