Nets' D'Angelo Russell has knee contusion after awkward landing

D'Angelo Russell has come roaring out of the gates during the first four weeks of his first season with the Brooklyn Nets, averaging a career-high 21 points per game.

Now, the Nets will likely be without D'Angelo Russell for a bit. Russell landed awkwardly and hobbled to the bench before going to the locker room. The Nets are scheduled to return home Tuesday against the Boston Celtics and host the Golden State Warriors next Sunday. However, he had looked much better during his last handful of outings.

Russell is averaging 20.9 points, 5.7 assists and 4.7 rebounds after being acquired in a June trade for Brook Lopez.

Los Angeles wanted to get out from under the three years remaining on Timofey Mozgov's contract, and Brooklyn smartly used the Lakers' desperation to get a player around whom it can build. Wojnarowski also reports Russell will undergo further evaluation on the knee.

The team did not say how many games Russell would miss.

Jeremy Lin's season-ending patella tendon injury, however, already put a strain on the Nets' backcourt depth.
