Quake of 5.4 magnitude strikes South Korea; no casualty reported

On November 15, a magnitude 5.4 natural disaster struck the city of Pohang, a southeastern coastal region of South Korea.

Analysts were monitoring "unusual seismic activity" in North Korea, the head of the nuclear test monitoring agency CTBTO said.

There were no immediate reports of any casualties or injuries.

The quake was centered off the coast about 9.3 kilometers (5.8 miles) northwest of the port city of Pohang, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The initial quake was recorded at a depth of 10km, USGS said.

China to send special envoy to North Korea
About 30,000 North Koreans have fled to South Korea, mostly via China, since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War. South Korea said the 12 women, and one man, had chosen to defect to the South.

The quake was felt across South Korea, including in the capital and on the southern island of Jeju, with reports there of buildings shaking and picture frames falling off walls, South Korean news agency Yonhap said.

South Korea was hit by a major 5.4 magnitude natural disaster earlier today.

South Korean officials are assessing the situation.

The Cultural Heritage Administration said Wednesday that there is no immediate damage detected to historic buildings and artifacts in Gyeongju, a city adjacent to earthquake-struck Pohang. According to state nuclear operator Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, neither of nuclear reactors on the southeastern coast was affected by the quakes.
