Rosogolla belongs to Bengal; state defeats Odisha

Rosogolla belongs to Bengal; state defeats Odisha

So Bengalis were quite surprised, if not hurt, in 2015 when the neighbouring state of Odisha suddenly claimed that the sweet was essentially an invention of that state.

India, as member of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), enacted the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration & Protection) Act, 1999 that came into force from September 15, 2003.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, now in London, called it a "sweet news". "We are very happy and proud that #Bengal has been granted GI ( Geographical Indication) status for Rosogolla", Didi's official handle said.

Das's son Krishna Chandra (1869-1934) expanded the business his father set up and is credited with the invention of another popular sweet "rosomalai".

Speaking to reporters Sunday, Trump said he will make a new announcement on trade when he returns to the United States. Trump is on a five-country trip through Asia traveling to Japan, South Korea, China, Vietnam and the Philippines.

Odisha, claimed that "Rasagolla" originated in Puri. However, writing about this news has definitely made our mouths water for the delectable sweet and we're sure you're going to visit your local sweet shop for some mouth watering rosogullas soon, isn't it?

Meanwhile, the Mohanty committee's final report in May 2016 quoted many historical Odia texts that were written well before 1868 and contained description of a similar sounding sweet as temple offering. Now with this Geographical Indication now rosogolla belongs to Bengal, not Odisha. The battle over rasgulla between Odisha and West Bengal going since two years and finally, it is settled under the GI Act. The Mowa is a winter delicacy made of puffed rice and date-palm jaggery with origins in Joynagar, West Bengal.

Kolkata: The two and a half years of bitter tussle ended on a sweet note for West Bengal.

Earlier candies like Sitabhog and Mihidana of Burdwan along with Mowa from Joynagar were accorded the GI tag from Bengal. Darjeeling Tea is the first product of the State to be accorded the GI. Bengal's rosogolla is off white and spherical in shape.
