Bad Santa director claims Weinsteins blacklisted Mira Sorvino from movie

Sir Peter Jackson has claimed Harvey Weinstein banned him from casting Ashley Judd and Mira Sorvino in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

The moviemaker, who eventually chose to tie himself to executives at New Line Cinema for the trilogy, told the website, "I recall Miramax telling us they were a nightmare to work with and we should avoid them at all costs. This was probably in 1998", he told Fairfax New Zealand. This was very likely the Miramax smear campaign in full swing.

Jackson now suspects he was fed incorrect information about the two outstanding actresses but, at the time, it was enough to prevent him casting them.

Director Peter Jackson attends a ceremony honoring him with the 2,538th Star on The Hollywood Walk of Fame on 8 December2014 in Hollywood, California.

Jackson said he considered the actresses, who have both accused movie mogul Weinstein of sexual misconduct, for roles in his JRR Tolkien mega-franchise, but passed them over on the advice of Miramax. Weinstein allegedly said Jason didn't have to exit the party, and after it became increasingly tense, Harvey said they should go outside and "talk about it", and Jason pushed him away and then hit him in the face. Weeks later, Weinstein called her after midnight and showed up at her apartment unexpectedly.

She went on to claim her career was affected by the Weinstein snub, adding, "I won an Oscar with Miramax. Movie-making is much more fun when you work with nice people".

There may have been other factors, but I definitely felt iced out and that my rejection of Harvey had something to do with it.

Jackson's quotes elicited an emotional response from Sorvino. "Just seeing this after I awoke, I burst out crying", Sorvino wrote on Twitter, linking to the interview.

"There it is, confirmation that Harvey Weinstein derailed my career, something I suspected but was unsure", she said.

Amongst the many names raised, Fran [Walsh] and I expressed our enthusiasm for Ashley Judd and Mira Sorvino.

The statement also said that Judd later appeared in two other Weinstein films, Frida and Crossing Over, and that Sorvino had asked Weinstein earlier this year for her husband to be cast in a series he was producing.

There was no indication that Mira Sorvino had any issues until Mr. Weinstein read about the complaints in the news.

Harvey Weinstein speaks at the UBS 40th Annual Global Media and Communications Conference in New York, NY, U.S. on December 5, 2012. "When Christopher Backus received a better offer, Mr. Weinstein allowed him to amicably break his contact to peruse the opportunity".
