Boeing dispute derails sale of Super Hornet fighters to Canada

Boeing dispute derails sale of Super Hornet fighters to Canada

Ottawa was planning to buy 18 F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jets but has elected instead to buy used F-18s from the Australian government, some of which will be cannibalized for spare parts for the Canadian military's existing stock, Reuters said.

But Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is not a fan of the F-35 and the Boeing spat means officials are prepared to look at rivals such as the Eurofighter Typhoon and Dassault Aviation SA's Rafale jet, say the sources, who asked to remain anonymous given the sensitivity of the situation.

The move comes in response to a 220 percent tariff placed the United States on Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier after Boeing accused the company of dumping airliners on the American market.

The Super Hornets were supposed to help tide Canada over as it holds a competition for fighters to replace 77 veteran CF-18s.

One defense expert noted that Britain, Germany and Italy intend to operate both the F-35 and the Eurofighter, evidence that Canada could buy the European jet and still operate with us air force F-35s. "With Canada, it was about $17 billion", the president said Tuesday in a meeting with Senate Republicans, according to Canadian news site Global News. It would be a deeply unfortunate outcome.

Ottawa says Bombardier is the latest victim of Donald Trump administration's trade policies, seeking to impose stiffer import penalties on a number of Canadian industries that Washington accuses of receiving government subsidies.

Canada had decided it needed Boeing's new Super Hornets to refresh its aging CF-18 Hornet fleet, but may have had a change of heart after the American manufacturer accused Canadian plane maker Bombardier of dumping in the commercial plane market.

The move to try to acquire fighter jets from Australia coincides with the US government's decision, based on a Boeing complaint, to hit Bombardier with nearly 300 per cent duties on its CSeries civilian passenger jet.

The final ruling in the case is expected next year, but the relationship between Boeing and Canada has nosedived since. It has been the standard line in Ottawa for months that Boeing, having failed to act as a trusted or valued partner, has effectively been shut out of any new federal contracts.
