Environmentalists say Donald Trump does not have authority to shrink Utah monument

Patagonia vowed to sue the White House and changed its website to address the "illegal move" in a bold declaration that reads, "The President Stole Your Land". In the largest-ever reduction of a national monument, the Bears Ears National Monument in Utah is being shrunk by 85%.

"I think the only thing this administration understands is lawsuits", Choinard told CNN. In total, five national monuments will see their size reduced, for a total rollback of 1.2 million acres that previously were under the federal government's protection.

The outdoor retailer has been opposing the Trump administration's public lands policies since the transfer of power from Barack Obama's presidency in January. The US Access Fund is also preparing to fight against the proposals.

Businesses that rely on travel to the monuments are anxious about what this decision will mean for them, Outdoor Industry Association Executive Director Amy Roberts told ABC News.

The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, created by Bill Clinton in 1996, will be downsized from 1.9 million acres to 1 million acres. Business owners are anxious that changing the monuments' status will lead to fewer people traveling to the area or opening new businesses there, she added.

"This is a sad day for indigenous people and for America", Navajo Nation Vice President Jonathan Nez said in a written response to the decision.

The recommendations, which are not yet final, are likely to anger opponents of Zinke's monuments review, who argue reducing borders and changing management plans will eventually lead to development on protected land.

Why Hugh Jackman turned down 007 role
He further added how he did not get any choice at that time as he said, "And the response was: 'Oh, you don't get a say". Jackman was determined to keep variety in his career, though, and two megafranchises would have likely prevented that.

The CEO of Patagonia, Rose Marcario, wrote in a TIME column today that they are suing in part because the changes will hurt the company's business.

Patagonia's argument for preserving public lands is as much an economic argument as it is an environmental and moral one. But it also gave presidents the authority to create national monuments on their own without Congress.

Elected officials in Utah were against the monument designation for Bears Ears and have said they thought the monument was too big.

Before President Trump even finished his triumphal visit to Utah yesterday, the first lawsuits were being filed. An action that Virgil Johnson, Chairman of the Confederated Tribes of the Goshute Reservations, said goes against the wishes of the Native American tribes. "Trump.pdf" target="_blank">filed a lawsuit aimed at protecting Grand Staircase-Escalante. These lands belong to the American people, and we must all stand up to protect them.

"The President and a handful of politicians would like you to believe that they are doing what is best by rescinding 85 percent of Bears Ears National Monument and almost half of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument", Marcario wrote.

About 3,000 people gathered outside near the Utah State Capitol to protest the decision, along with a "handful" of counterprotesters, The Associated Press reported.

In the proclamation announcing the redrawn boundaries of Bears Ears, President Trump claimed that the move was necessary due to "the lack of a threat of damage or destruction to many of those objects". For many years we have fought to protect our ancestral lands, and millions of people have supported us in this.
