Fugitive Kentucky attorney to be returned to United States after Honduras arrest

Fugitive Kentucky attorney to be returned to United States after Honduras arrest

Eric Conn, who, until December 2, was one of the FBI's most wanted fugitives is back home in Kentucky.

Spokesman Jorge Galindo of the country's Technical Agency of Criminal Investigation said they left Honduras on a private plane. He arrived at Blue Grass Airport Tuesday night.

Conn left the U.S. on 2 June 2017 and has been on the run since then.

He pleaded guilty in federal court earlier this year in Lexington in a $550 million fraud case.

On 12 June, Conn was sentenced to 12 years in prison in absentia - the maximum jail sentence for this fraud offence.

Honduran reporters said agents from its national police agency had been following him for several weeks. "He let people like my husband have trust in him, and he let that down".

The FBI held a press conference Tuesday to announce officially the capture of fugitive ex-attorney Eric C. Conn. "Social Security" was deported from Honduras on Tuesday where he had fled after pleading guilty in a $550 million disability fraud scheme, USA authorities said. "He refused to do so".

A $20,000 reward was offered for information leading to Conn's arrest. A truck Conn is believed to have used during his escape was discovered in New Mexico near the border with Mexico, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said in July. A conspiracy unraveled that resulted in another indictment against a co-worker that allegedly helped plot his escape and tested border crossings.

Conn is set to be brought back to the U.S. Tuesday. They included agents from the Social Security Administration, Health and Human Services, the IRS, the federal Probation office and the U.S. Marshal, as well as Pikeville, Lexington and University of Kentucky police.

Conn was a flamboyant attorney known for his billboards and TV ads across Kentucky.

Conn's capture was cheered by his former clients and their families, who have struggled to make ends meet while fighting to keep their Social Security disability checks.
