Google Blocks YouTube on Amazon's Echo Show and Fire TV

Google Blocks YouTube on Amazon's Echo Show and Fire TV

YouTube will be pulled from the Echo Show today.

The feud goes back to 2015 when Amazon removed Google's Chromecast streaming device from its store.

Between those difficulties and the fact that Amazon pulled some of Nest's recent products (including the new Thermostat E, Camera IQ and Nest Secure alarm system), Google doesn't seem inclined to let Amazon continue to run its "hacked" versions of YouTube on its devices, though our source says that Google would be much happier working directly with Amazon than forcing consumers to pick sides.

This latest development is the escalation of a long-simmering conflict that first bubbled to the surface in September, when Google started to block Amazon's implementation of YouTube on the Echo Show, the company's latest voice-enabled speaker with integrated display.

In a bold strike against Amazon, Google earlier today pulled support for its YouTube app from both the Amazon Echo Show and the Fire TV.

Kansas gas prices continue downward spiral
Lower demand because of the cooler weather and a cheaper winter blend of gasoline has finally brought relief to consumers. Gas prices in Georgia have declined 20 of the past 21 days, for an average total discount of 7 cents.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Google said the company blocked YouTube due to failed negotiations with Amazon. Not only has Google blocked the Echo Show from YouTube again, it has expanded the block to include Fire TV devices.

The move is the latest part of a back and forth between the two companies who have been cutting their products off each other's platforms and services.

"Google is setting a disappointing precedent by selectively blocking customer access to an open website", an Amazon spokeswoman said via email. "We hope to resolve this with Google as soon as possible". Neither can its Chromecast video streaming device. In a statement on the matter, Google accused Amazon of refusing to sell certain Google branded products.

Engadget notes that the design and features of the YouTube app on the Echo Show created a sticking point between the two tech giants.

The Amazon-YouTube fight is also reminiscent of TV industry disputes over carriage fees-in which cable companies stop carrying popular channels-and reflects how the companies that once sought to disrupt media monopolists are turning into them instead.
