Google to Shift Chrome Apps to Progressive Chrome Apps

Google to Shift Chrome Apps to Progressive Chrome Apps

In order to enable a more seamless transition from Chrome Apps to the web, Chrome will not fully remove support for Chrome Apps on Windows, Mac or Linux until after Desktop PWA installability becomes available in 2018.

The removal of apps from the Chrome Web Store was actually first announced by Google back in August 2016. We've also long since known that Google would drop Chrome web apps from Linux, Mac and Windows. Google expects that PWAs will be available on desktops come mid-2018. There are two types of Chrome apps: "packaged apps and hosted apps", Google explained in a blog post from previous year. Provide remote assistance to Windows, Mac and Linux users, or access your Windows and Mac desktops at any time, all from the Chrome browser on virtually any device, including Chromebooks. Additional enhancements to the Chrome apps platform will apply only to Chrome OS devices, including kiosks.

Yesterday, Google kept its promise by completely removing apps from the Chrome Web Store. Add to that, most of the hosted apps were, in fact, already implemented as regular Web apps.

If it sounds complicated, you can check out the Google Support documentation which takes you through setting up and using Chrome Remote Desktop on your Windows, Mac or Linux PC or Chromebook. All Chrome Apps that have already been installed on Chrome browsers will also cease to function sometime in early 2018. Because of this, other companies are jumping on the PWA bandwagon: it works on Samsung Android phones in the Samsung browser, Firefox on Android, and Opera on Android.

Congress is punting on the government shutdown deadline
The Senate approved the $1.4 trillion tax-cut plan on Saturday; the legislation now moves to a House-Senate conference committee. Some Republicans want a large boost in the defense cap, and Democrats are demanding an equal increase in non-defense spending.

Google wants to throw yet another app type into the mix, though.

To replace the apps Google is working with developers to create Progressive Web Apps (PWA).

Users who have Chrome OS laptops won't have to worry since they will still continue to have access to Chrome apps for the foreseeable future, according to Engadget.
