Lubaina Himid Wins the 2017 Turner Prize

Lubaina Himid Wins the 2017 Turner Prize

Lubaina Himid, a 63-year-old artist whose creations include dinner plates painted with vomiting aristocrats, became the oldest person ever to win Britain's most prestigious art award - the Turner Prize - on Thursday. She is also the first black woman to receive the award.

The jury chose to reward her for the "vitality of her work" and "the seriousness of the issues she deals with, which are very relevant today", said Tate Britain museum director and president of the award jury, Alex Farquharson. The panel added that they "acknowledged her role as an influential curator and educator who continues to speak urgently to the moment". Himid was chosen ahead of Hurvin Anderson, Andrea Büttner and Rosalind Nashashibi, who each took home £5,000.

Since the 1980s, Himid has focused on a range of subjects related to race, from matters of the African diaspora to the visibility of black artists in museums.

At its 63 years, Lubaina Himid surpasses in more than a decade limit of age that Turner imposed on 1991 (seven years after its creation) but that in this edition it has made a decision to eliminate. Her paintings, prints, drawings, and installations are now in the collections of Tate, the Whitworth Art Gallery, and the Leeds City Museum, among other institutions.

To significantly raise the profile of this important artist, Modern Art Oxford, Spike Island and Nottingham Contemporary are running concurrent presentations of Himid's work from January 2017.

Several Democratic senators to Al Franken: Resign
He's repeatedly promised to "cooperate completely" with any investigation by the Senate Ethics Committee into his past behavior. For his part, Franken has apologized for the earlier incidents, but has shown no signs of plans to give up his seat.

One of the best known prizes for the visual arts in the world, the Turner Prize aims to promote public debate around new developments in contemporary British art.

The members of the Turner Prize 2017 jury were Dan Fox, writer and co-editor of Frieze; Martin Herbert, art critic; Mason Leaver-Yap, Walker Art Center's Bentson Scholar of Moving Image and associate curator at KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin; and Emily Pethick, the director of Showroom, London.

Judges from Tate Britain praised her various projects - including the solo exhibitions Lubaina Himid: Invisible Strategies and Navigation Charts - for raising "questions of personal and political identity". The exhibition has proved one of the most popular in Turner Prize history, attracting 90,000 visitors to date.

The annual award for contemporary art was presented to Himid by electronic music star Goldie, in a televised ceremony held in Hull Minster church in the north eastern city of Hull.
