New vehicle registrations fall -11.2% in November

The UK new auto market declined for an eighth consecutive month in November, according to figures released today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

At issue is the slump in the sale of diesel engines cars, down 30.6 per cent last month.

Year to date, overall registrations declined 5.0% to a total of 2,388,144 - putting the market on course for its first annual downturn since 2011.

Petrol and alternatively fuelled vehicle (AFV) registrations actually increased by 5% and 33.1% respectively, but this wasn't enough to make up for a massive 30.6% year-on-year drop in diesel registrations. Fleet registrations were down 3.9% to 1,228,967 units, with "Business" registrations down 5.4% to 92,226 units and private demand down 6.3% to 1,066,951 units.

Alex Buttle, director of vehicle website motorway.co.uk, said: "The flight from diesel has been so severe over the past few months that total sales figures are nearly meaningless as a point of reference for the health of the auto industry".

UK new car sales fell 11 percent in November - data

This is the eigth consecutive month of decline in United Kingdom auto sales, something which the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has branded as a "major concern".

Nathan Coe, Auto Trader's Chief Operating Officer, said, "2017 has been a challenging year for the new vehicle market, with Brexit continuing to cast a shadow over consumer confidence, exchange rates impacting the profitability of United Kingdom new vehicle sales and the effect of the ongoing demonisation of diesel only serving to confuse consumers and hamper production plans for manufacturers".

He also hit out at the Budget measures, saying more needs to be done to encourage people out of diesel vehicles - which were encouraged by previous governments as a cleaner alternative to petrol due to their lower Carbon dioxide emissions. "The decision to tax the latest low-emission diesels is a step backwards and will only discourage drivers from trading in their older, more polluting cars".

"Penalising the latest, cleanest diesels is counterproductive and will have detrimental environmental and economic consequences".
