Philippines halts sale of dengue vaccine as Sanofi downplays risk

Representative Office Philippines on Tuesday clarified that it did not prescribe in mid-2016 the use of dengue vaccine Dengvaxia in the Philippines' national immunization program.

Congress and the Department of Justice have set investigations, but both will have to rely on information from health experts as a review and more research are conducted on the safety and efficacy of a vaccine against dengue.

When asked about the status of vaccine in India, the company said it had submitted the vaccine regulatory file to the Indian authorities in October 2015.Awaiting approval for its dengue vaccine in India, French drug major Sanofi today said it has shared data with authorities here about the risk of administering its vaccine to patients who have not been infected with the virus previously. It said its Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization would meet to review evidence next week. Moreover, the drug manufacturer needed to report any incidence that caused serious illness or death due to Dengvaxia.

"Only one in 800 of all dengue infections (including symptomless infections) could lead to a severe infection, and the increased risk identified from the new analysis translated to two additional cases of "severe dengue" out of 1,000 previously dengue-uninfected people vaccinated over five years of follow-up", the company said in an emailed statement.

A statement from Sanofi said the long-term trial results highlighted "the complex nature" of dengue infection as it proposed a "label update" on the use of the vaccine.

"In this group, all fully recovered with proper medical treatment".

Drivers protest electronic logging device mandate
Heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers earn a median salary of $19.26 an hour, according to the list. In less than two weeks, a new item will be installed in a majority of truck drivers' cabs.

An estimate of 734,000 children aged over nine have received the first dose of the Dengvaxia through the country's dengue public immunization program, the world's first, according to officials.

Whether ongoing investigations will hold certain former officials liable for the mess, attention must be focused on any adverse effects that might be suffered by children with no history of dengue who have received the vaccine.

As of November 2017, about 733,713 Filipino children have been given the anti-dengue vaccine.

Dengvaxia, the first approved Dengue vaccine, had been forecast by Sanofi to eventually bring in almost $1 billion in annual sales.

Dengue is a mosquito-borne tropical disease that kills about 20,000 people a year and infects hundreds of millions.
