Republican Rep. Trent Franks of Arizona to resign amid 'inappropriate behavior' allegations

Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ) is expected to resign from Congress, multiple outlets reported Thursday, citing unnamed sources.

It is unclear exactly why Franks is stepping down.

"The statement will explain", he said.

Thursday evening Franks declined to confirm to a gaggle of reports that he plans to resign.

House approves bill granting gun owners hide and carry reciprocity
Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-11th Dist.), whose Morristown office was picketed this week by opponents of HR 28, supported the bill . Proponents say the bill would make it easier for those who own guns to travel.

Franks, a member of the conservative Freedom Caucus group on Capitol Hill, has reportedly engaged in inappropriate behavior over the years. His departure had not been expected, and one of the consultants said Franks was leaving on Thursday. He's a staunch social conservative who sponsored House-passed legislation to make it a crime for any person to perform an abortion if the age of the fetus is 20 weeks or more. Biggs said he would not comment until Franks announced his plans. But no revelations were aired in the aftermath of the decision, and Franks went on to assume the chairmanship of a House Judiciary subcommittee.

Trent is now serving his eight term in Congress - he was first elected in 2002.

Franks is a congressman from Arizona's 8th district.

The governor is required to establish the date of the primary election within 72 hours of the seat being officially vacated.
