Rules changes include no more viewer call-ins

Available from 1 January, additional two-stroke penalties for failing to include a penalty on the scorecard when the player was unaware of the penalty have now been eliminated.

Thompson was leading in the final round of the ANA Inspiration when officials told her she had been assessed a 2-shot penalty because of a rules infraction a day earlier.

The new set of protocols for reviewing videos was agreed by a working group led by the R&A and USGA and also consisting of the PGA Tour, LPGA, European Tour, Ladies European Tour and the PGA of America.

"Have confidence in us running the event", said Thomas Pagel, USGA senior director of rules and amateur status.

"The PGA Tour has worked closely with the USGA and R&A on this issue in recent years, and today's announcement is another positive step to ensure the Rules of Golf align with how the game is presented and viewed globally", Tyler Dennis, executive vice president and COO of the PGA Tour, said in a statement.

"We have concluded that while players should continue to be penalized for all breaches of the rules during a competition, including any that come to light after the scorecard is returned, an additional penalty for the scorecard error is not required".

South Korea calls for 'WARTIME' control as North Korea war 'imminent'
After his trip, he pointed out the "urgent need to prevent miscalculations and open channels to reduce the risks of conflict". The North's advances come amid growing worldwide condemnation and defiance of United Nations sanctions.

The golf governing bodies announced Monday that beginning January 1, such information will not be considered in administering the rules of golf, according to a joint announcement made by the United States Golf Association and R&A.

Only video obtained from the official broadcast coverage will be considered for rules infringements, with any picture from an individual's smartphone or camera being disregarded.

The new protocols and Local Rule are the latest measures announced by The R&A and the USGA to address concerns related to video evidence.

In April, under Decision 34-3/10, the USGA and R&A issued a new "reasonable judgment" standard, which protects players from penalties for infractions undetectable to the naked eye.

A TV viewer emailed that Thompson had replaced a ball on the green at the wrong spot and because she signed her card after the round as usual, that was another 2-shot penalty. She was penalized two shots for the infraction. The world of golf was up in arms, and sadly it had not been the first time an armchair referee had impacted the outcome of a tournament. These replays are also now limited to a rules official and the official broadcast (no cell phone footage), and television viewers are barred from affecting the festivities.

It seems common sense has now prevailed, but how has Thompson reacted? "She lived it, and she genuinely moved on". In fairness, the rule change should be called the Lexi Ruling.
