Rupert Murdoch's $30 million Southern California estate is under threat from wildfires

Rupert Murdoch's $30 million Southern California estate is under threat from wildfires

The property, last valued at $30 million, includes a 7,500-square-foot house and the 13-acre Moraga Vineyards.

Media mogul Rupert Murdoch's home in Los Angeles is reportedly in the vicinity of the Skirball fire, which is sweeping through the Bel Air area of the city.

Mr Murdoch's Moraga Bel Air winery issued a statement on Twitter on Wednesday saying, "We are watching the situation unfold very carefully along with everyone else. Our main concern at the moment is for the safety of our neighbors and first responders".

A Moraga employee reached by phone said all employees had been evacuated, but could not confirm whether the property or its facilities had been directly impacted by the fire. Mandatory evacuations were put into effect Wednesday morning in Bel Air.

Although no casualties have been reported, the fires have forced mass evacuations, cancellation of classes at dozens of schools and resulted in the loss of power at more than 250,000 homes in Ventura County.

The winery, bought by Mr Murdoch for about 30 million dollars in 2013, has been evacuated.

The Associated Press reported that the evacuation orders affected around 200,000 people and that almost 200 homes had already been destroyed.

The Skirball Fire in the area south of scenic Mulholland Drive and north of Sunset Boulevard is just one of several major out-of-control brush fires that have sprung up in Southern California since Monday, when Santa Ana wind conditions set in.

The Getty Museum tweeted that it would be closed to the public Wednesday and that air filtration systems were in use to protect the galleries from smoke.
