Rye Canyon Loop was also closed, along with state Route 126 from Copperhill Drive to the 5 Freeway.

There were no injuries reported, but the fire had prompted evacuations of around 5,000 people from about 1,300 homes and the closure of sections of the Golden State (5) Freeway and state Route 126. Less than two hours later, it had spread to 5,000 acres, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The Rye Fire was 5 percent contained Wednesday after it burned about 7,000 acres in Santa Clarita, authorities said. Westridge High School, Rancho Pico Middle School and Oak Hills Elementary School were evacuated as well. Eastbound lanes of Newhall Ranch Road remained closed.

The fire was at 1,000 acres about 1:15 p.m.

All classes starting at 5 p.m. or later at both campuses of College of the Canyons were canceled.

With red flag warnings still in effect, wildfires continue to rage all over Southern California, from Ventura to San Bernardino, with a new fire breaking out in Skirball Canyon near the Getty Center Wednesday morning, closing the northbound 405 in both directions and sparking new evacuations.
