South Korea calls for 'WARTIME' control as North Korea war 'imminent'

After his trip, he pointed out the "urgent need to prevent miscalculations and open channels to reduce the risks of conflict".

South Korea has pushed for control of its troops from the USA in the face of war from the North.

"If North Korea promises to abandon nuclear and missile programmes, that will lead to dialogue", he added while visiting an army base in northern Japan to observe a separate Japan-US drill. The North's advances come amid growing worldwide condemnation and defiance of United Nations sanctions.

The drill, which will last two days, is taking place off the Korean peninsula, and comes after Pyongyang fired an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on November 28 that it claimed could strike anywhere in the US. The THAAD system has sparked controversy because China opposes it.

The South condemned the launch and on Monday imposed new unilateral sanctions on its neighbour.

South Korea calls for 'WARTIME' control as North Korea war 'imminent'

The installation of the US THAAD system in South Korea has angered China, which fears its powerful radar could look deep into China and threaten its own security.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in held a meeting on Friday with the country's top military officers and called on them to boost national defense capabilities to deter North Korea.

North Korean flew two medium-range ballistic missiles over the Japanese island of Hokkaido earlier this year and has threatened to bracket the US territory of Guam with missiles tests on all sides of the island.

Washington is also pressuring China and other countries to cut diplomatic and trade relations with the North, as part of an worldwide effort to squeeze Pyongyang by cutting off its illegal cash flows which are widely believed to be funding the country's weapons programs.

"This unilateral sanction will prevent illegal funds flowing to North Korea and contribute to reinforce global communities' sanctions against North Korea", South Korea's finance ministry said in a statement.
