Sunil Gulati will not seek 4th term as US Soccer president

It was clear to most people that Gulati didn't deserve to be rewarded with another four years on the job in the wake of the USA men's failure to qualify for World Cup 2018.

Sunil Gulati told ESPN FC's Sam Borden on Monday that he won't run for re-election as U.S. Soccer president.

The 58-year-old Gulati, who announced his decision Monday, has been a driving force in the USSF for more than 30 years.

Gulati took over as U.S. Soccer President in 2006 and has run unopposed in every subsequent election. After the U.S. lost to Trinidad & Tobago, 2-1, and failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, Gulati refused to resign (as men's head coach Bruce Arena had done) but he didn't confirm he'd run either. "I think several of them would be in for a pretty big shock about what the job is - it's not just about national teams".

Mayfield, Love, Jackson Named Heisman Finalists
The 83rd Heisman Trophy victor will be announced Saturday during a ceremony that will be televised by ESPN starting at 8 p.m. Former Ohio State running back Archie Griffin is the only two-time victor , having earned the Heisman in 1974 and 1975.

"The loss to Trinidad was painful, regrettable and led to a lot of strong emotions". But the October defeat to Trinidad & Tobago that eliminated the Americans has cast a pall over a tenure from Gulati that included substantial growth in revenue, the 2015 Women's World Cup title, and runs to the round of 16 at the men's World Cups in 2010 and 2014. "So fair or not, I accept that and think it's time for a new person". Seven candidates are already in the running to replace him: former US national team and MLS players Eric Wynalda, Kyle Martino and Paul Caligiuri; attorneys Steve Gans, Mike Winograd, longtime soccer administrator Paul Lapointe; and US Soccer VP Carlos Cordeiro.

Kathy Carter, the head of the USSF's marketing partner Soccer United Marketing (SUM) is also reported to be mulling a run. In the three full men's World Cup cycles of Gulati's reign, the US advanced to the knockout rounds in two (good!) but then failed to qualify at all for Russian Federation 2018 (disaster).

Gulati did not tell ESPN which of the candidates he would endorse.
