Thousands condemn Trump admin's plan to shrink Utah national monuments

Thousands of people gathered at the Utah State Capitol Saturday to rally against President Donald Trump's anticipated announcement to shrink two national monuments in Utah.

Trump has already offended Native Americans by overriding tribal objections to approve the Dakota Access and Keystone XL oil pipelines and using a White House event honoring Navajo Code Talkers to take a political jab at a Democratic senator he has nicknamed 'Pocahontas'.

The Utah Highway Patrol estimated the crowd to be about 5,000 people, the Salt Lake Tribune reported.

Trump has reportedly told U.S. Sen. Native Americans in national costumes, alongside demonstrators with banners reading "Save Bears Ears", "Protect Wild Utah" and "Hands off Utah", called for the monuments to be preserved.

Locals, business owners and city officials rallied against an executive order to shrink Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments.

Trump and his deputies have argued that numerous national monuments designated by previous presidents under the 1906 Antiquities Act were overly broad given what needed to be protected. The President is scheduled to come to Utah Monday to make the decision final and release updated maps.

Bears Ears was designated a national monument in 2016 by President Barack Obama. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., made the inquiry Friday after Trump's nominee to serve as Department of Agriculture general counsel informed them that the department had not recommended the Interior Department remove any Forest Service acreage from existing national monuments. 'He wants to turn public lands over to corporations to mine, frack, bulldoze and clear-cut until there's nothing left, ' she said.
