The new smartphone, priced at Rs 4,999, comes with a metallic matte finish and has a dedicated microSD card slot for storage expansion, Xiaomi Regional Business Head South and East, Sunil Baby told reporters.

Smartphone manufacturing major Xiaomi today launched the "Redmi 5A" in the city on the eve of the nationwide online sales. Additionally, the company also promoted the launch of the Xiaomi Redmi 5, with a few video teasers. The phones have been subjected to various leaks recently.

Earlier this week, Donovan Sung, Xiaomi Global spokesperson, revealed the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus ahead of launch. The Redmi 5 with 16GB storage is priced at $199.99 (around Rs 13,000) while the Redmi 5 Plus with 32GB storage is priced at $249.99 (around Rs 16,000). It is also said that the Redmi 5 Plus will arrive in just two variants- 3GB+32GB and 4GB+64GB. It is expected to be powered by a Snapdragon 625 or 630 SoC coupled with either 3GB or 4GB of RAM with 32GB and 64GB storage, respectively. The pricing of these variants will naturally be higher. Both the new smartphones will be available in Pink, Gold, Blue, and Black.

If the pricing seems reasonable, we offer you a sneak peek into the features. The trimming of the bezels is giving more room for the displays for a better viewing experience. The Xiaomi Redmi 5 will have 5.7-inch display while Redmi 5 Plus will support a larger 5.9-inch display.

Xiaomi is bringing with new Redmi 5, the Full view display design in the low budget smartphone segment. The Redmi 5 Plus is expected to be bigger than this. It will be powered by a 3200mAh battery which is significantly smaller than Redmi 4's 4100mAh one.

On the camera front, the Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus are getting a 12MP rear-facing shooter and a 5MP front snapper, which again isn't a massive improvement over the 13MP rear snapper with f/2.0 aperture, PDAF and 5MP selfie snapper with f/2.2 aperture in the Redmi 4.
