Airbus posts record deliveries in 2017

Airbus lagged its American rival for much of 2017, but managed to capture the global sales title for a fifth consecutive year with a massive deal at the Dubai Air Show in December. Airbus posted 1,229 gross or unadjusted orders compared with Boeing's 1,053.

Airbus said its commercial plane deliveries reached a new record of 718 in 2017.

Deliveries were more than four percent higher than the previous record of 688 set in 2016. Boeing delivered 763 aircraft past year, beating its own 2015 record by one. Emirates, by far the biggest operator of the plane, scuttled a deal to buy 36 of the planes in November, leaving Airbus hanging and raising doubts about the future of the program.

Emirates is the only airline with enough capacity to take enough planes to keep the program alive, Airbus sales chief John Leahy said Monday in an online presentation.

Plane making chief Fabrice Bregier said engine supplier Pratt & Whitney had turned the corner on delays that had disrupted single-aisle aircraft output, and predicted close to 800 deliveries in 2018. Boeing also suffered cancellations for its competing 747.

European plane manufacturer Airbus is considering halting its A380 superjumbo aircraft.

Bregier confirmed plans, first reported by Reuters, to reduce A380 production to as few as six aircraft per year, compared with 15 deliveries last year.

"Every 15 years, air traffic doubles", he said.

"Quite honestly, if we can't work out a deal with Emirates, I think there is no choice but to shut down the programme, but I'm hopeful that we'll work out a deal with Emirates, and others can add airplanes on top of that", he said.
