Apple says all Macs and iOS devices affected by chip flaws

In a recent statement, Apple has revealed that almost all Apple computers, tablets, and phones have been affected by the recently discovered Meltdown and Spectre CPU bugs. The United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team, part of the Department of Homeland Security, recently revised a note that advised companies to replace all hardware vulnerable to the exploits.

Security experts have said highly regulated sectors of industry, such as government offices and public health institutions, are most at risk of compromise as a result of the chip security vulnerability.

Considering the issues affect virtually all processors, your computer and smartphone are likely impacted.

Some of the world's largest tech companies have been working on fixes for these problems.

Be careful what you are installing on your device.

The flaws can be exploited in a side-channel attack, which take advantage of quirks in the computer processor's circuits rather than software vulnerabilities. "The good news is that Spectre is harder to exploit".

The vulnerabilities could allow a hacker to steal your passwords and other sensitive information.

Microsoft has also warned users that its patches for Meltdown won't reach them if their third-party antivirus hasn't been updated to support this week's Windows security update.

GM sees the announcement Friday as a significant step toward the widespread adoption of self-driving vehicle technology. GM spokesman Kevin Kelly said the first of the autonomous Chevrolet Bolts is being tested.

"In the coming days we plan to release mitigations in Safari to help defend against Spectre", said Apple. So what exactly is Spectre and Meltdown and how can they affect my Apple device? They are urging Intel to fix the problem and to offer those affected compensation for any losses that have occurred.

Google provides a helpful list of its products and services affected by the chip bugs, as well as their mitigation status.

According to a statement, Intel and its partners have made significant progress in deploying updates as both software patches and firmware updates.

Chromebook owners running Chrome OS 63, released December 15, are protected against the flaw. For example, in Google's Chrome browser on a computer, you can click on the three dots in the upper-right corner and click Update Google Chrome.

Fixes: Released on Windows, servers, cloud, and Edge and Internet Explorer browsers. On Wednesday, Amazon also announced that it would be patching its systems to further protect users, and upcoming patches from both Google and Microsoft have also been scheduled.

The so-called Meltdown flaw allegedly affects all systems running Intel x86 chips and is present across all popular operating systems, including Windows, Linux and macOS. If you're running an older system, Windows 7 or 8, the update is also available, but you may want to install it manually.

The company recommends that users ensure their browser is kept up to date, and that all operating system and security software is kept current.

Everyone with a computer, a phone or any smart device at home or work is being urged to update their software because of a potential cyber threat. Steps are being taken to resolve the problem, and all major computer manufacturers are already releasing patches.
