Benitez prepared to shelve any bid for top Toon stars

Benitez prepared to shelve any bid for top Toon stars

That's according to the BBC's Mark Lawrenson, who also admitted it's hard for Rafa this January.

Asked if the club was any closer to a breakthrough, Benitez said: "I thought that we could sign a player this week, but we couldn't do it".

If he can improve a lot during these months - and I am sure he will continue improving - then you never know.

"Whatever happens, we will still be missing something in certain positions and that is why we are trying to bring players in".

He said: "It is a team that has a new manager and is doing well".

"Without saying any names, we are not thinking about selling anyone who is playing and who is ready, because we need players", said Benitez, ahead of this afternoon's Premier League home game with Swansea City.

Benitez has stressed the need for additions if Newcastle are to stay up, but he has not made one signing so far this month, and he surely now will be hoping that he does not have to watch another player on his wishlist join a different club.

Newcastle have been in discussions with Chelsea about a loan deal for winger Kenedy.

"I think it is important we don't lose the game but still have the mentality we have to get three points".

"We have to work with the names that we have and we have to try and do our best in the conditions we are working in".

Reports yesterday suggested a Dubai-based group have also expressed an interest in buying out Ashley, but given that they have not even begun a formal process of due diligence, if they do harbour any serious ambitions of mounting a takeover, they are at an extremely formative stage.

Benitez has discussed his ideas with Ashley and Charnley.

Rafa Benitez said back in December that ideally he wanted all new signings to be completed by 15 January and failing that, by 20 January at the very latest.
