Blood shortage prompts urgent call for people to donate

Thirteen Connecticut blood drives were canceled because of last week's winter storm, causing 339 donations to go uncollected, according to the Red Cross.

There is a blood drive set for 11 am to 7 pm, Tuesday, January 16 at the First United Methodist Church, Maryville.

Right now, the Red Cross says, there is a critical need for Type O negative and B negative blood donations.

January is National Blood Donor Month, a campaign started by the American Red Cross in 1970 to promote winter blood donations across the country.

"With the weather that we've been seeing across the east coast, we've had a really big loss in donations, even into the new year", said Red Cross District Manager Sonja Ronovech. Further adding to the diminishing supply, hectic holiday schedules, winter weather and an active cold and flu season collectively contributed to more than 28,000 fewer donations than what was needed in November and December.

Vermont poised to approve recreational marijuana

There, she received additional transfusions, and Rusher was moved to the neonatal intensive care unit, where he also received a blood transfusion to increase his red blood cell count.

The next Red Cross blood drive in Monroe will be February 2 from 7:45 a.m.to 1:30 p.m.at Masuk High School. "It's the blood on the shelves that helps save lives in an emergency, and that's why we're asking eligible individuals to make an appointment to give blood or platelets today".

Gov. Malloy says he comes from a family of donors and has been giving blood for the past 40 years. Donation appointments and completion of a RapidPass are encouraged to help speed up the donation process.

All blood types are needed to help ensure a sufficient blood supply is available for patients - especially platelet and type O negative and B negative donors.

Due to the high demand of platelets, Grant said the Red Cross is accepting them seven days a week.
