Butterflies and Moths May Have Predated Flowers

Butterflies and moths may have evolved during the Jurassic era - millions of years before the first flowers bloomed on the Earth, a study has found. The scientists analyzed the fossils of a prehistoric moth and came up with the conclusion that the ancestors of the modern-day moths or butterflies existed before flowering plants.

"Modern day butterflies are well known for their association with flowering plants (angiosperms) and the butterfly "tongue" has always been assumed to be an important adaptation for feeding on flowering plants".

An open-access study, titled "A Triassic-Jurassic window into the evolution of Lepidoptera", appeared online Wednesday in the journal Science Advances.

The earliest known butterfly fossils are from the mid Eocene epoch - between 40-50 million years ago.

To help them slurp up tasty nectar from floral tubes, butterflies and moths have a long, tongue-like mouthpiece known as a proboscis. Moths and butterflies lived over land masses.

Experts say they are the earliest fossilised evidence of the insects, and shed fresh light on their evolution - and also that of their butterfly relatives. "They were feeding off the cone-borne seeds - mainly as a source of water", said Strother.

Strother said the insects "later transferred their feeding preference onto angiosperms [flowering plants], and, as a result, ended up co-evolving with flowers where they function to transfer pollen as they feed on nectar".

According to the police report, Man's family did not have any contact with her following her second disappearance on October 10. The 19-year-old student first disappeared on October 8 last year, but returned home after a relative contacted police.

The study looks at 70 specimens found in a drill core from more than 300 meters below Earth's surface, and identifies them as the wing scales that give butterflies and moths their spectacularly varied colors and patterns. In addition, their delicate features were prone to deterioration prior to fossilization.

Assembling the evidence required a team that included Strother and van de Schootbrugee, Utrecht University's Timo van Eldijk, an undergraduate at the time, Carolien Weijst, and Henk Visscher; as well as Torsten Wappler of the German natural history museum Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt, and Hossein Rajaei of Museum fur Naturkunde, in Stuttgart.

Study co-author Bas van de Schootbrugge, a paleontologist at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, said "the fossil remains contain distinctive hollow scales, and provide clear evidence for a group of moths with sucking mouthparts, which is related to the vast majority of living moths and butterflies".

The early Lepidopterans survived the mass extinction at the end of the Triassic, which wiped out many other living things, the BBC report said.

In 2012, Strother was examining the sample slides looking at algae, fungi and soil microorganisms. They generally treated these as a distraction from their real work, and focused instead on pollen and spores as a continuous record for understanding past ecosystems. Pieces of plant cuticles.

Researchers studying deep-drilling cores have long noticed odd flecks of material in their samples, possibly from insects.

"It's basically pond scum", said Strother, referring to the film of debris that can sit atop a pool of standing water. When he analyzed those scales under a microscope, he found out that some scales nearly 200 million years old, were hollow in structure. "It is more like a puzzle or a mystery".
