CHIP Funding Included in Proposed Spending Bill

CHIP Funding Included in Proposed Spending Bill

President Donald Trump will not leave for a weekend at his Palm Beach estate unless a government shutdown is averted.

Trump took to Twitter to express his concerns over the looming deadline and again stressed its importance for the US military.

Senators will resume debate Friday morning on a bill passed by the House late Thursday on a vote of 230-197.

Trump has ordered the Obama-era DACA program, which protects immigrants brought to the USA illegally when they were children, to expire on March 5.

"I'm looking for something that President Trump supports, and he's not yet indicated what measure he's willing to sign", McConnell told reporters.

In September, President Donald Trump ordered an end to the Obama administration program that shielded young undocumented immigrants who were brought to the US illegally as children.

Senate Republicans are considering a fallback option that would keep the government open for an even shorter period while they work on a breakthrough. "#Dreamers belong here. I will vote NO on this spending bill because it does not put them on a pathway to citizenship", Sen. Republicans are including the full, six-year extension of CHIP-not a short-term extension-in their continuing resolution tentatively scheduled for a House vote Thursday night. "Long-term planning makes for good solutions". Democrats want a 1:1 increase in military and non-defense spending, while Republicans want roughly twice the amount of money for defense.

"The group that loses big would be the military and we're never letting our military lose at any point", he said.

Democrats have generally support previous stopgap measures, but Schumer said Wednesday that an "overwhelming number" of Senate Democrats "don't like this deal and they believe if we kick the can down the road this time, we'll be back where we started".

White House chief of staff John Kelly met on Wednesday with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus to make the case that Mr Trump had "evolved" on his signature campaign promise to build a wall the length of the U.S. border with Mexico. Dick Durbin (D-IL).

The House only reached a deal after making key concessions to conservatives in the House Freedom Caucus which included the promise of a seperate vote on increasing military funding in the coming days.

"This is not a time to play politics", said House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.). "They want to spend next week hobnobbing with their elitist friends instead of honoring their responsibilities to the American people", she said.

House Republicans have some wiggle room but not much.

Funding for CHIP and protections for DACA recipients both have bipartisan support, but a DACA agreement will be the harder deal for Democrats to negotiate, with Republican hard-liners like Sen. (Senate Minority Leader) Senator (Chuck) Schumer, do not shut down the federal government. Republicans are also without Sen.

Democrats have more leverage in the Senate because it's more closely divided and they can push to require 60 votes to break a filibuster.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said: "My Democratic colleagues' demands on illegal immigration, at the behest of their far-left base, have crowded out all other important business".
