Detroit Motor Show: Ford electric SUV to wear 'Mach 1' badge

BMW plans to have 25 "fully electric" and "plug-in hybrids" available by 2025.

Ford is resurrecting the Mach 1 model name, but not for a Mustang.

The carmaker earmarked $14bn of savings to make in October, "but since then we've made even more progress in identifying the areas where we can be more efficient", he said in an interview at the Detroit Motor Show. The last time the Mustang Mach 1's name was heard was back in the early 2000s when a special edition version was sold in 2003 and 2004.

The new hybrid range will be part of Ford's global electrification strategy, which will see "13 new global electrified vehicles" come ton market in the next five years. Now Ford sells in the US only one all-electric vehicle - Focus.

Turnbull told 2GB radio on Wednesday that the Greens "sometimes go beyond parody of themselves". We've achieved all of that, living together in remarkable harmony.

The hi-po electric SUV project is also likely to be the first product from Ford's Team Edison, a battery-electric vehicle skunkworks formed late previous year with the single-minded goal of fast-forwarding the US-based global auto maker's EV development.

Moreover, Ford plans to use this huge funding boost in order to develop and market 40 electrified vehicles globally, including 16 fully battery electric-powered vehicles by 2022.

Ford´s shares have lagged those of rival General Motors over the past year, with the latter buoyed by positive investor sentiment on its aggressive push into developing electric and self-driving cars.

The funding pledge is more than double the $4.5bn the company said it would invest between 2015 and 2020 on bringing new electric vehicles (EVs) to market. "Well, it's too soon to show you but here's what our next battery electric is going to feel like", Farley said while a shockwave of electricity ran through a city landscape on the big screen. Today the company confirmed the hybrid will launch in 2020 and be built at the company's Dearborn, Michigan assembly plant. The vehicle was previously discontinued in the North American market, though it continues to be retailed globally.
