Ed Sheeran will compete with Liam Gallagher, Loyle Carner, Rag'n'Bone Man and Stormzy for British Male Solo Artist at this year's awards.

The "New Rules" hit maker is up against Paloma Faith, Jessie Ware, Kate Tempest and Laura Marling in the best British female category.

Commenting on his four nominations, Sheeran wrote on Instagram: "Thanks for all my Brit award nominations, and well done to all the other nominees".

One Direction singers Liam Payne and Harry Styles will also compete with former bandmate Zayn Malik in the category.

Stormzy and Rag'N'Bone Man are also included on the best album shortlist for respective efforts Gang Signs And Prayer and Human alongside Lipa's eponymous debut and Sheeran's Divide as well as rapper J Hus's first release, Common Sense.

Ed Sheeran, Dua Lipa, Liam Payne and Stormzy are among the nominees for this year's Brit Awards, Britain's most prestigious pop music prizes.

Alicia Keys, Björk, Lorde, Pink and Taylor Swift are up for International Female, while Beck, Childish Gambino, DJ Khaled, Drake and Kendrick Lamar are nominated for International Male.

Speaking to BANG Showbiz at "The BRITs Are Coming", Liam - who has son Bear with Cheryl, 34, - said: "I built this little bar, well I bought the tools, I imagined this bar area in our house with all of our awards on the wall". "This is where I am from so it it's extra special". We all needed a break, it got a bit insane at one point.

He told the Press Association: "I'm really proud of British music as a whole at the moment".

The band - who previously won seven BRIT Awards - went on an indefinite hiatus back in 2016 and, despite having no plans to reunite anytime soon, Liam insisted that they are very much still a band.

"To be one of the people who are mentioned among these names... There's lots more to come in 2018 from all of us and I will do my best to make it another memorable year!"

The Brit Awards will take place on February 21 at London's O2 Arena.
