England win toss and bowl against Australia in first ODI

Limited-overs captain Morgan praised Bayliss' impact as England looks to restore pride in a five-match one-day global series against Australia and build towards next year's Cricket World Cup.

Australia completed an emphatic 4-0 win in the recent Ashes Test series and the five one-day matches offer a chance for the English to salvage something from a disastrous tour.

Bayliss has been the subject of plenty of criticism following England's Ashes defeat, but it has been clear throughout his tenure that apart from home success, his remit had been largely directed at the 50 and 20-over formats.

He was joined by captain Joe Root as England reached 87-2 after just 10 overs. Eoin Morgan needs to stand up as skipper, while Joe Root will look to provide plenty of support at four.

"He's (Roy) imposing at the crease, and what a way to start the series".

They will be relying on some fresh ideas and strategies set by Perth Scorchers bowler David Willey and Liam Plunkett for how to slow down the Aussie skipper. Now the captain has echoed those sentiments: "He has been brilliant for us", Morgan said.

They had been rocked early on when for the first time this winter England confronted them with genuine pace. "We are going with the mantra that we always need to be on top of our game and testing the opposition the whole time".

Having sweated all winter about the best way to dismiss him, they then did so in the most innocuous way imaginable when a scruffy first over from Rashid concluded with Smith's bat turning in his hand and the ball being snaffled by wicketkeeper Jos Buttler at the second attempt after taking the inside edge.

"The gap between the England team in that World Cup and where we need to be in 2019, I don't think anybody knows".

However, the Australian management is confident that the star opener will play the first ODI on January 14.

"Ben is a fantastic player", said Morgan. He's a huge part of our side so we're desperate for him to be fit and well.

No further clues were given as to the starting XI for the first of five ODI matches, although Morgan did hint that all three openers - Jonny Bairstow, Jason Roy and Alex Hales - could feature. Andrew Strauss, our director of cricket, gave absolute clarity in what we wanted. "It creates a lot more calm around the periphery".
