Sam Rockwell has won the best film supporting actor Golden Globe Award for his role in "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri".

Numerous stars - including the likes of Meryl Streep, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman - donned black as an expression of female empowerment and to declare that "time's up" on sexual harassment.

"The deluge of sexual misconduct revelations has been the story of the year, so it's safe to predict that it will be the story of the night at the Golden Globes", Debra Birnbaum, executive editor for television at industry weekly Variety, told AFP.

Meyers, 44, hinted ahead of the awards ceremony that political banter would likely take a backseat during his opening remarks, in favor of addressing the issue of sexual harassment and assault in Hollywood.

Meyers' opening line set the tone, in which he said, "Good evening, ladies and remaining gentlemen".

"If it's any consolation, I'm a man with absolutely no power in Hollywood".

As Meyers himself acknowledged, this was a year that might have been better served by having a woman host.

"Considering what has been going on this year with powerful men and their bad behaviour in Hollywood, a lot of people thought it would be more appropriate for a woman to host these awards and they may be right", he said. "Don't worry, he'll be back in 20 years when he becomes the first person to be booed at the annual In Memoriam", said Meyers, earning groans from the audience. While introducing Meher Tatna, the HFPA president, Meyers joked that she was a president who "actually is a stable genius", in reference to Trump's tweets over the weekend.

"The Shape of Water", directed by Guillermo del Toro and starring Sally Hawkins, Michael Shannon and Octavia Spencer, leads with seven film nominations. "Simpler times (referring to Rogens movie The Interview)".

Meyers went on to congratulate Insecure creator and star Issa Rae for having "three projects in development" with HBO - to which Rae responded, "yeah. and three projects is also where they think I'm from".

"So if that's true, I just want to say: 'Oprah, you will never be president!"
