Google Assistant shouts down Alexa at CES

Amazon's Alexa and Google's Assistant are just a few years old, and this year's CES proved their parent companies are still fighting over every inch of the voice-assistant market.

If you're familiar with CES and the typical bout of companies and products they feature each year, you will know that Google is rarely amongst them.

When Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) launched its first smart speaker, the Echo, back in late 2014, its smart voice assistant platform was confined exclusively to its own devices. In the future, it's plausible people could use Alexa for searches instead. Though it's to note that Google does offer Google Express, a feature which lets users buy Walgreens, Costco and Toys "R" Us products. The device will respond to requests and control smart tech, and the addition of a screen means it can display images and YouTube videos, and make video calls.

Google is also looking into a strategy for buying products and services with Assistant, similar to how Alexa is capable of purchasing items. So far in terms of the battle of digital assistants, it has been pretty much been Alexa versus Google Assistant.

Steep discounts during the holidays on the most affordable models of Google's Home smart speakers and the Amazon Echo likely meant both companies were taking losses to get them into millions of homes, analysts told Reuters.

Google has finally given us a proper Google Assistant directory on the web, one that allows for an easier discovery experience over all that the Assistant can do.

Lenovo is known for computing, but JBL is a speaker brand first and foremost, which demonstrates the hybrid nature of these devices.

According to sources close to the matter, Google is toying with the idea of launching a revamped online store in February.

Sure, other AI assistants had a presence, whether that was Google Assistant, Microsoft's Cortana, or even Baidu's Duer. For now, they will rely on their partners Lenovo, LG, JBL, and Sony to produce the displays. We have a feeling more OEMs will follow.
