How it happened: President Trump's derogatory remarks

President Trump's remarks about African countries and Haiti drew condemnation from a group of African ambassadors to the United Nations who called them "outrageous, racist and xenophobic" and demanded a retraction and apology. But two immigration hard-liners, Republican Sens.

The remarks were allegedly made when lawmakers visited him on Thursday to discuss a bipartisan proposal that would impose new restrictions on immigration but protect the so-called "Dreamers" - hundreds of thousands of immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children - from deportation. President Jovenel Moise's government issued a strongly worded statement denouncing what it called a "racist" view of Haitian immigrants and people from African countries.

Republican Sens. Tom Cotton and David Perdue, who've been close allies to the president on the issue of immigration, were in a White House meeting with him Thursday when Trump, according to sources, expressed frustration with people coming to the USA from "sh-hole countries".

Here's what five of the lawmakers who attended the meeting said afterward about the controversy.

"We can solve the DACA issue, but we've got to have some structural changes to how people come into the country", Senator Perdue said in the TV interview.

"That's highly unbecoming of a president if somebody uses that kind of language, period", Kang said.

"Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) confirms it, and Sen". Not just once but repeatedly.

U.S. President Donald Trump answers reporters' questions during a news conference with Prime Minister Erna Solberg of Norway in the East Room of the White House January 10, 2018 in Washington, DC. "That was the nature of this conversation".

According to the Charleston Post and Courier, South Carolina's other GOP senator, Tim Scott, said Graham had told him the reports were "basically accurate".

"Because of the Democrats not being interested in life and safety, DACA has now taken a big step backwards", Trump added. How does it help or hurt America? Isn't Trump demonstrating that he's nothing but a racist and pursuing a policy of "Make America White Again"?

Many US media outlets reported the comments on Thursday, quoting witnesses or people briefed on the meeting.

It was unclear now how a deal might emerge, though both sides insist the clock is ticking. "Hope for Haiti fundamentally rejects the statements that were made". John Cornyn, the No. 2 Senate Republican, reiterated on Thursday after the White House meeting that a deal would only move for a vote with a clear message from the President that he would sign it.
