Ilini remain winless in Big 10 with overtime loss to Iowa

IL hosts Iowa Thursday night at 7 a battle of two 0-fer teams in the Big Ten Conference. However, the Hawkeyes got after it on defense and Luka Garza had a breakout performance to help them outlast IL 104-97 in overtime for its first conference win.

"It's huge", Cook admitted after he and his teammates improved to 1-5 in the Big Ten, 10-9 overall. With 3:53 left in the first half, Iowa trailed 49-29 but Luka Garza and Jordan Bohannon helped bring the Hawkeyes all the way back for an overtime victory.

On Iowa's next possession, Garza snared an offensive rebound and scored while falling to the ground and he made the and one to complete the three point play.

It was Iowa's second-largest road comeback in program history. The Hawkeyes knocked down shots at a 50 percent rate, and the Illini shot 48.6 percent. The Hawkeyes were +19 on the glass (45-26) and they went 33-of-40 from the free throw line (Illinois was 11-of-14). The sophomore went 5 of 12 from 3-point range, but none were bigger than that one. More impressive, though, was Illinois's three point shooting, which stood at an unreal 9/15 (60%) at half.

Iowa coach Fran McCaffrey said Iowa stated to find its way even before the 10-0 burst. "He kept his composure because they came after him". Of the Hawkeyes' 14 games that accepted bets, nine have finished over the projected point total.

FYI: Fighting the flu Saturday at Michigan, Black's seven-point scoring effort was the first time since November 17 he didn't hit double digits playing a full game for the Illini.

Danielle Berry recorded her first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. In the first half, Iowa was allowing IL to shoot 60% from three point range and committed 11 turnovers on offense.

Illinois Falls to Iowa in Overtime

The Hawkeyes rank 33rd in blocks per game (4.9) while the Fighting Illini rank 166th (2.2). Instead of going through just one devastating lapse in the first half, as it has in other games, Iowa actually had two and found itself trailing IL by as much as 20 (49-29) in the opening 20 minutes.

"Frazier is quite a player", McCaffery said. "First half was fun to watch, not so much the second".

"We came out right from the jump in the second half, " Garza said.

Tyler Cook registered his second double-double of the season (21 points, 13 rebounds).

Iowa (10-9) and IL (10-8) clashed in Champaign on the evening of January 11 in a battle of winless teams in Big Ten play.

For Frazier, that was his seventh 3 of regulation, ending the first 40 minutes of the game with a career-high 27 points. On the season, Iowa has defeated opponents by an average of 5.7 points. They would hold on for the 104-97 overtime win. Illinois' Tony Wysinger had 34 points of 13-of-16 shooting.

IL reeled off 13 straight points in a run in which Iowa missed seven straight shots and also turned the ball over five times and the Illini later added a 10-0 run to seemingly take control. In the second half, Garza was the X-factor. Garza finished with a double-double. Garza scored eight straight points during a key stretch where Iowa took its first lead since the second minute of the game. It was an insane, off-balance three as time expired that tied the game at 90.
