In line with national shortage, local blood center sees supplies drop

2018 has been a very busy year for first-responders and the American Red Cross nationwide. According to a recent report from Kingsport Times-News, they hold about 650 blood drives at local schools and businesses each year to meet this demand.

The American Red Cross this week issued an urgent call for blood and platelet donations.

However, the only way patients in need can receive blood transfusions is through voluntary blood donation and blood drives, making these vital events. "It didn't cost you anything, and you saved a life", Faas said.

"Blood is always needed, especially during this time, because of the severity of draws being closed, and also due to the fact of the donors being sick", he explained.

This winter's particularly rough and early flu season, combined with the aftermath of natural disasters such as Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria, have created an even greater need for blood donations regionally and nationally.

Severe winter weather with snow storms and frigid temperatures has had a tremendous impact on blood donations.

Eligible individuals are urged to schedule a blood or platelet donation today by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767).

The next blood drive in the Magic Valley will be January 22 to 24 at the Church of Ascension Episcopal in Twin Falls.

- Thursday, Jan. 18 - Four Horsemen Comics at the Meadowbrook Mall is hosting a blood drive from 12:30 to 5 p.m. "Students who participate as a blood drive coordinator can earn a gift card and are eligible to win a scholarship up to $2,500 for higher education".
