Infrastructure destroyed by IAF last night was terror tunnel, IDF confirms

The army said that the tunnel, which ran for nearly a mile, extended 650 feet into Israeli territory, and was used to bring weapons into Israel for use by terrorists.

Once a rare move, it will be the second time Kerem Shalom is punitively closed in under a month, as Israel seeks to force the ruling Hamas terrorist group to return quiet to the Gaza Strip.

The tunnel began east of the city of Rafah in the Gaza Strip, crossed into Israel some 180 metres, then continued into Egypt for an unspecified length, with no exit point detected, he said.

Last week, the IDF struck what many assumed to be a tunnel in the Gaza Strip, following a series of mortar attacks.

The military said in a statement that the tunnel extended from the Palestinian town of Rafah, staring about 900 meters from the Israeli border, and was dug below the border crossing and under pipelines used to transport natural gas and gasoline into Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the tunnel was a "major terrorist infrastructure belonging to Hamas in the Gaza Strip".

Conricus said Israel had coordinated with Egypt on the operation. 'Hamas must understand that we will not allow these attacks to continue and that we will respond with even greater force, ' he told reporters before boarding a flight to India.

The army also denied the claim made by Hamas late Saturday night that the Israeli jets had targeted a smuggling tunnel between the Gaza Strip and Egypt, TOI reported.

Israel has been constructing a sensor-equipped underground wall along the 60-km (36-mile) Gaza border, aiming to complete the $1.1 billion project by mid-2019.

Similar clashes took place in 17 different locations within the West Bank, the IDF said, while also continuing efforts to catch the perpetrators of a terrorist attack which killed Rabbi Raziel Shevach on a West Bank road last Tuesday.

Unrest has included rockets being fired from the Gaza Strip into Israel, with Israel's military responding with air strikes.

On Saturday night the IDF announced it would be closing the Kerem Shalom crossing after an assessment of the current security situation, but did not provide further details.
