JCPOA Not Renegotiable, Trump Making 'Desperate' Attempt: Iran's Zarif

By thus "decertifying" the arrangement, he opened a window for Congress to reimpose sanctions, but to date, it has not done so - leaving the issue of the waivers.

Iran said on Saturday it would retaliate against the new sanctions, although it did not specify how.

Most U.S. trade with and investment in Iran already is banned under separate U.S. sanctions for Tehran's human rights abuses, ballistic missile program and support for terrorism, but the administration and its supporters said more are needed.

Russian Federation - one of the parties to the Iran pact alongside the United States, China, France, Britain, Germany and the European Union - called Trump's comments "extremely negative".

In July 2015, after a decade of strenuous negotiations, Iran and six major countries, namely, China, Russia, Britain, France, the US and Germany, struck a final agreement on Iran's controversial nuclear programme.

Trump said on Friday he would waive nuclear sanctions against Iran for the last time to give Washington and its European allies a chance to fix the "terrible flaws" of the 2015 nuclear deal.

Iran's foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, took to Twitter to describe Trump's decision and the announcement as "desperate attempts to undermine a solid multilateral agreement".

Under the accord, Iran slowed its nuclear programme in exchange for an easing of global economic sanctions.

While approving the waiver on US sanctions related to the nuclear deal, Washington announced other sanctions against 14 Iranian entities and people, including judiciary head Ayatollah Sadeq Larijani, a close ally of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

But the officials also want the triggers to include Iran's growing ballistic missile program, which was not part of the nuclear deal, and to remove sunset clauses that allow some nuclear restrictions to ease or phase out over time.

The president's proposals to "fix the deal's disastrous flaws" include Iran's agreement to open all sites immediately to global inspectors and an assurance from Tehran that it will never develop a nuclear weapon. One aspect of the law that Trump has particularly bristled at is having to give Iran a "thumbs up" every few months by acknowledging that it is meeting its nuclear requirements.

United Nations inspectors have certified Iran's compliance with the deal nine times, most recently in November.

The deal on Iran's nuclear program was reached between Iran and six worldwide mediators (the United Kingdom, Germany, China, Russia, the United States, and France) on July 14, 2015.

Trump's declaration puts great pressure on Britain, France and Germany, the European signatories to nuclear pact with Iran.
