Jignesh Mevani Leads 'Yuva Hunkar' Rally

New Delhi, Jan 9 Jignesh Mevani, the face of new- found Dalit assertiveness in Gujarat, made his debut on the national political stage today with a rally here where he called the Narendra Modi government a "threat" to democracy and the Constitution. The Delhi Police, however, had denied permission for Mevani's rally for which he accused the government of not allowing the youth to speak for their rights. "It is you who has to answer the reason behind violence on Dalits, violence in Saharanpur, in Bhima Koregaon". "I don't have to answer it but you have to answer me". You have to answer why people are not getting the money that is in the foreign accounts of Indians. We are the believers of love. "We will celebrate 14th February (Valentines' Day)", Jignesh Mevani said to huge cheers from the audience. Earlier, scores of people gathered around the barricaded Parliament Street for the protest march planned by Mevani.

Organisers of the event said they would submit a copy of the "Manusmriti" and the Constitution to the prime minister, asking him to chose between the two. "These aren't books, but belief systems" Addressing a rally in Karnataka recently, Hegde had that the BJP had come to power to "change the Constitution" and would do so in the "near future". "Since there is an NGT (National Green Tribunal) order that no protest can be staged at Jantar Mantar, we have asked organisers to hold the protest at alternate sites like Ramlila Maidan", senor police officer Ajay Chaudhary has said. The rally demanded the release of Bhim Army founder Chandrashekhar Azad who was arrested a year ago in connection with the Dalit-Thakur clashes in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh. His supporters turned up at the rally with posters bearing his image.

"I believe in politics of unity". "We don't follow love-jihad". "The way in which Hardik (Patel), Alpesh (Thakore) and Jignesh (Mevani) with the support of the youth in Gujarat brought the BJP down from over 150 seats (target set by BJP in Gujarat) to 99 seats".
