The UK government's accident-prone streak continued in the new year as British Prime Minister Theresa May's weaker than expected Cabinet reshuffle began with an erroneous tweet from the Conservative Party's official Twitter account wrongly announcing the party's new chairman.

This reshuffle helps us do just that by bringing fresh talent into Government, boosting delivery in key policy areas like housing, health and social care, and ensuring the Government looks more like the country it serves.

David Lidington replaced Mr Green, taking his other title as Cabinet Office Minister, while Brandon Lewis was installed to take over from Sir Patrick McLoughlin as Conservative Party chairman.

Research from the Sutton Trust showed 34 per cent of the 29 ministers attending cabinet went to independent schools, compared with 30 per cent of her first cabinet past year. Instead, Esther McVey becomes Work and Pensions Secretary.

On day two, May first assembled her new line up of ministers at Downing Street, before hiring and firing a number of second-tier ministers.

David Gauke was made the sixth justice secretary in eight years, prompting campaigners to voice fears that constant changing is delaying reform to prisons.

Jeremy Hunt is still healthcare minister - albeit with the additional responsibility of social care, after he fended off May's offer of a turbo-charged business secretary role for almost two hours.

The reshuffle was sparked in part by the resignation of May's ally, Damian Green as the de-facto deputy prime minister, after police who were investigating a separate matter revealed they had found thousands of pornographic images on his computer.

Downing Street said that following the reshuffle there were more women attending cabinet, more female ministers and more members of the government from ethnic minorities.

In a letter to the prime minister, Brokenshire said he had a small lesion on the lung which required surgery.

According to The Sun's Tom Newton Dunn, Hunt was supposed to move to the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy brief, but refused. With Boris Johnson, David Davis and Philip Hammond untouched, Theresa May has managed to effect a deft intra-party exercise. Their task is to liaise with MPs in the House of Commons. The BBC's political editor, Laura Kuenssberg, noted the slow pace of announcements and made an ironic reference to May's widely mocked statement, made after modifying plans for social care during last year's election campaign, that "nothing has changed". Rising star James Cleverly, who is open about his prime ministerial ambitions, is a step closer to realising those with his first promotion - he joins Cabinet as Lewis' deputy.

And, despite her intention to focus more on domestic matters, the next 12 months are likely to be dominated by negotiations with the European Union, leaving ministers with little time or energy to tackle issues like health, transportation and housing.

Terminator provider BPAS said it was "incredibly disappointed" with the decision due to the MP's past opposition to the decriminalisation of abortion.
