New Zealand Prime Minister pregnant with first child

New Zealand Prime Minister pregnant with first child

"It will be the same when Jacinda takes her child to work into the New Zealand parliament for the first time - except for Jacinda will have the world's attention, which will be a wonderful thing for women everywhere".

Ardern, who came to power through a coalition deal after a closely fought election a year ago, has experienced a meteoric rise to power as New Zealand's youngest prime minister in more than a century, and its third female leader.

She formed a government with the backing of Winston Peters, leader of the small New Zealand First party. Pakistan's Benazir Bhutto gave birth while she was prime minister in 1990.

The couple discovered she was pregnant on October 13 - two weeks before she was sworn in as national leader.

If the baby does arrive in June, Ardern can potentially take leave after the Budget and, even if she needs a bit more time, be back on deck before the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting and Apec in November. That is set to rise again to 26 weeks in 2020. However, when that the expecting mother in question is New Zealand's Prime Minister, it seems that the floodgates are suddenly open for criticism and derision.

Trump is wrong about you: An open letter to students from 'shitholes'
Trump drew widespread criticism last week after he reportedly referred to African countries as "shithole" countries . Rand Paul was one of 11 candidates who were up against Trump during the 2016 Republican presidential primary.

Ardern shared a photo of three fishing hooks representing herself, Gayford and the baby to announce the pregnancy on Thursday.

Advocacy groups and politicians from across the political spectrum were quick to offer support. She said her partner, Clarke Gayford, the host of a television show about fishing, would take a leave from his job after the birth to become a stay-at-home parent.

"It's really inspiring... having our prime minister lead by example is a great sign of how far we've come in women's industrial rights in New Zealand", said Council of Trade Unions president Richard Wagstaff in an emailed statement to Reuters.

"I can only do my best", said Jacinda Ardern, who in June is due to become only the second serving world leader to give birth while in office.

However, the flipside to this has seen nearly overwhelming support towards Arden, Clarke, and their future child, with many trying to make it clear that not only is Jacinda not the first female to give birth, but that this is a resoundingly normal scenario, regardless of political position.
