Pakistan's suspension of defense, intelligence cooperation with USA backed by experts

The US on Wednesday hoped that Pakistan would demonstrate its willingness to aggressively confront terror groups that operate from its soil, amid reports that Islamabad has suspended Intelligence cooperation with America after the Trump administration froze military aid to it.

"A day earlier, Pakistan's Defense Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan said there is "... a wide field of intelligence cooperation and defense cooperation, which we have suspended".

"Pakistan has the right to use available options if the USA takes such measures against Pakistan and I think the government has come up with a mature response so far", Awan told Xinhua on Wednesday when asked about Pakistan's decision to suspend defense and intelligence cooperation.

A Pakistani court has ordered the release of a radical anti-U.S. cleric who went to Afghanistan with thousands of volunteers to help the Taliban fight against Americans after the 2001 US -led invasion, a defense lawyer said Tuesday.

The briefing comes as the United States in recent days stepped up efforts to put pressure on Pakistan to do more to combat terrorism.

The session was conducted by Pakistan Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif and top military generals in Islamabad.

Defense experts think the USA allegations and halt to military aid have forced the Pakistani government to use its leverage as it has this option, in view of the growing US pressure and its use of the blame game.

White House doctor declares Trump 'in excellent health'
Mr Trump himself has pushed back hard against any suggestion that he's mentally unfit, declaring himself "a very stable genius ". His mental state notwithstanding, Trump is the most physically out-of-shape president since William Howard Taft a century ago.

The current U.S. -Pakistan feud first kicked off after Trump first took office, when he called out Islamabad in August 2017 during the announced of a new strategy for Afghanistan that called for an increase in troop levels, saying Washington could "no longer be silent about Pakistan's safe havens for terrorist organizations".

Under pressure from the United States, Pakistan on Wednesday played the victim card, claiming that India is "distracting" it from counter-terrorism efforts.

Although it is still not clear how much aid has been stopped, Mr Olson said the decision could affect about $1.3 billion worth of annual aid.

"It must be appreciated that Pakistan has fought the war against terrorism largely from its own resources, which has cost over $123 billion in 15 years", office of the spokesperson noted. Pakistan could apparently help serve this objective of the US with the latter's lame accusations.

Public accusations by Trump and other US officials were not taken well in Pakistan and political watchers and senior media personnel have slammed the USA move.

Pakistani leaders had shown restraint but the Defence Minister's statement could be seen as an indication of growing tension, Xinhua news agency reported. "It is time for a courteous yet ruthlessly candid dialogue between Pakistan and the USA", he said.

The development comes amid rising U.S.
