Passports won't serve as address proof anymore?

MEA in its statement said, "As the last page of the passport would not be printed now, the passport holders with ECR (Emigration Check Required) status would be issued a passport with orange passport jacket and those with non-ECR status would continue to get a blue passport".

Passports have been a key component of the Ministry of External Affairs under the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ministry has accelerated the process of printing and distributing passports to Indian citizens since the government came to power in May 2014.

To keep in line with the worldwide standards, Indian passports may soon not include any information printed on its last page.

The MEA is additionally thinking about a few changes in the shade of global IDs.

An MEA spokesperson did not respond to an e-mail seeking comment but Surendera Kumar, under-secretary of policy and legal matters at the consular, passport and visa division of the ministry, confirmed that the change could happen when the "next series" of passports is being issued.

There was, however, no word from the ministry on whether the passport would cease to be a valid document for proof of address for official purposes as a result of the move to do away with the personal details page. Hence, no longer the passport can be used for verifying your address.

The Sanchi was carrying 136,000 tons of condensate, worth some $60 million, and bound for the Republic of Korea. All 21 Chinese crew members of the Crystal, which was carrying grain from the USA , have been rescued.

"The decision to keep the last page of the passport blank has been taken", and this has been done to keep the privacy and identity of the person secured.

Besides this, the colour of the passport will also undergo some minor changes.

While Indian passports have a blue cover, diplomatic and official passports have white and red jackets, respectively.

If the Ministry says yes to the plan, then the changes may be applicable from next series onwards and the current passports will remain valid, reported HT. These are all included in the first page of the passport booklet.

Soon, however, those in the ECR category will have orange passports, Kumar said.
