Rory McIlroy in heart scare

Rory McIlroy in heart scare

He says he'll get an electrocardiogram every six months and an MRI once per year.

That doesn't sound great, obviously, but it also doesn't sound like it will affect his swing like the rib injury did a year ago.

Rory McIlroy said a viral infection he contracted 18 months ago in China has led to damage to his heart.

The 28-year-old from Northern Ireland, lacking only a victory at the Masters to complete a career Grand Slam, has bought the former home of South African four-time major victor Ernie Els at the nearby Bear's Club.

"The rib's fine, no problems whatsoever - I had an MRI scan on my thoracic spine and all was OK", McIlroy told the Telegraph Friday.

McIlroy said in an interview with The Telegraph that he has a thickening of the left ventricle. "I needed the reset that I've just had. Hey, I was planning on doing that anyway", he said.

California mudslides leave 13 dead, hundreds trapped in Montecito

"I feel there's been a big reaction to it in the media which there really shouldn't be". He did finish second in two European Tour tournaments, the BMW SA Open and British Masters, and recorded five top-10 results on the PGA Tour, including at the Masters (seventh) and The Open Championship (fourth). "I don't care about the world rankings".

"That hasn't always been the case with me".

"I played my best a year ago when I played the last round of the British Masters and actually had a sniff".

He added: "It's nice to be world No 1, sure, and I will get back there, but it's all about winning tournaments".

McIlroy will return to action in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship starting Thursday at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club in the United Arab Emirates. I don't feel I need to compare myself to anyone else, because I know what I can do.
