Samsung unveils monstrous 146-inch modular MicroLED TV dubbed "The Wall"

Samsung unveils monstrous 146-inch modular MicroLED TV dubbed

It's not the same technology as OLED, and Samsung says it offers the flawless blacks of OLED but can get much brighter and has fewer off-axis color issues.

MicroLED is based on Samsung's Cinema Screen technology, designed for movie theaters.

The Wall is really fantastic, but it's also still just a concept, meaning that you won't be able to buy one anytime soon.

Ever the videophile, Andru is also keeping his eye on the new TVs being announced, including a giant, 146-inch TV from Samsung called simply The Wall. For starters, the underlying display technology is a vastly different from what you'd get at Best Buy. According to Samsung: "Users can add or remove modules to make their TV bigger or smaller, in any configuration, removing previous limitations on screen size, with zero impact on the performance of the display". In other words, aside from its ridiculous size, The Wall is as close to the ideal new TV as we've seen so far from any brand.

LG OLED
The proprietary LG OLED technology is designed to deliver perfect blacks thanks to its ability to turn each pixel on or completely off

Thanks to its smaller self-emitting LEDs, Samsung's technology promises an even brighter image while delivering black levels that are on a par with or better than OLED. Currently, the company sells a 100-inch version, and introduced 80- and 88-inch versions at CES. Other vendors touting 4K projectors included Sony, LG, and Chinese vendor Changhong.

The modular technology behind The Wall allows the TV to be customised to individual viewing room needs. But I was interested to see a couple of vendors, such as Stream TV and Changhong (working with technology from MirraViz), pushing glasses-free 3DTVs.

The QLED TV will feature twice the resolution of current top model televisions, and Samsung Australia television product manager Hass Mahdi said the screen would use artificial intelligence to automatically upscale shows to appear in crisp 8K resolution. It's probably still a niche technology, but it is interesting. While LG has yet to release more details to its TV it did reveal that the key to its roll-up design is the fact that it doesn't need backlight to run.
